KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia's national auto firm Proton on Thursday expanded its range of cars available in Indonesia with the launch of two new models at a motor show in Jakarta.
"With these new additions, Proton now has four models in the Indonesian market," the company said in a statement released in Kuala Lumpur.
The new models were unveiled by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Also present were top Proton officials, chairman Mohammed Azlan Hashim and managing director Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.
Proton said the two models, the three-door hatchback Satria and the four-door family sedan Waja, are priced competitively.
"I am confident that we will be able to expand our presence considerably by the end of the year," Mohammed Azlan said in the statement, adding that more new models will be introduced by year-end.
The trouble national carmaker is seeking to expand its overseas markets amid declining domestic sales.
Proton last year lost its status as Malaysia's biggest-selling automaker to home-grown rival Perodua and recently reported larger than expected net losses of 591.36 million ringgit (US$172.4 million) for the year to March 2007.
The government is under intense pressure to find a strategic foreign partner for Proton to provide technical expertise and open up new markets.
Talks are currently being held with both Germany's Volkswagen AG and US automaker General Motors on a possible alliance. - AFP/de
