TOKYO : Japanese game software maker Square Enix made a takeover offer Friday for its smaller rival, Tecmo, as it seeks to expand.

Square Enix said it would pay 920 yen (8.46 dollars) per Tecmo share, roughly 30 percent more than 706 yen, which the share closed on Thursday.

Square Enix, producer of such popular titles as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts, said it would withdraw the offer if Tecmo refuses or fails to respond by September 4.

"Tecmo is an extremely sophisticated group of game creators who have made their marks in the global market place. It is a rare asset in Japan," Square Enix said in a statement.

"Square Enix group wishes Tecmo to become a member company and hopes to encourage further growth of Tecmo while also further expanding our group."

Tecmo said in a short response that the company would consider the offer.
