BANGKOK: Thai share prices closed 2.33 percent lower on Tuesday due to fears of prolonged domestic political unrest after the government declared a state of emergency in the capital, analysts said.

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej invoked emergency rule across Bangkok following fatal clashes between pro- and anti-government protesters overnight.

Analysts said investors also feared national strikes planned for Wednesday.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) composite index plunged 15.71 points to close at 659.51 points, while the blue-chip SET-50 index fell 12.73 points to 465.32.
