Thai stock market suspended after falling more than 10%

BANGKOK: The Thai stock exchange reopened following a half-hour suspension of trading on Friday, after the index fell by more than ten percent amid a global market meltdown.

The SET composite index fell by 10.02 percent at the start of the afternoon session, rebounding slightly after reopening to be 9.36 percent or 46.78 points down at 453.21 by 3.30pm (0830 GMT).

The SET-50 bluechip index was at 313.11 points, down 35.03 points or 10.06 percent.

The drop was in line with regional markets amid fears of a global recession and financial meltdown.

An official at the Stock Exchange of Thailand corrected an earlier statement, saying trading was suspended for a half-hour, not an hour as she previously said.

The policy of the Securities Exchange Commission is to suspend the Thai bourse when stocks fall by more than ten percent.
