DAEGU, South Korea : Tyson Gay beat his arch-rival Asafa Powell to win the men's 100 metres at the Daegu Pre-Championship Meeting in the southern Korean city of Daegu Friday.

Gay, who ran 9.69sec -- the second fastest time ever -- last Sunday in Shanghai, clocked 9.94sec this time.

The American, who complained of fatigue and thigh pains upon arriving in Korea, overcame a mediocre start to zip past Jamaica's Powell.

Running to Gay's right, Powell was the early leader but ended up at 10 flat. Fellow Jamaican Nesta Carter was third at 10.15.

World record holder Usain Bolt pulled out of the meet earlier this month citing fatigue. Without Bolt, Wallace Spearmon of the US ruled the 200 metres, coming in at 20.29sec.

Jeffrey Lawal Balogun of Britain and Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis ranked second and third.

Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva won her fourth straight gold medal in Daegu, despite clearing only 4.60 metres, 46 centimetres short of her world record.

After making 4.60 in her first attempt, Isinbayeva tried to jump over 4.85 metres but failed on three attempts.

Yusuf Saad Kamel of Bahrain took the men's 800 metres in an upset at 1:45.09, as world champion and Olympic gold medalist Wilfred Bungei finished out of the medals.

American Carmelita Jeter maintained her fine form with a convincing win in the women's 100 metres. Jeter finished at 10.83sec, more than half a second faster than the runner-up, Sherone Simpson. Jeter had set her personal best time of 10.64sec last weekend in China.

Olympic champion Nancy Langat of Kenya took the women's 1,500 metres in a breeze. She and Mardrea Hyman separated themselves from the pack early but after Hyman pulled herself out of the race midway through, Langat had a clear path to the finish line. She ran 4:06.80, followed by Lidia Chojecka's 4:08.35.
