JOHANNESBURG : Rain caused the abandonment of the first one-day international between South Africa and England at the Wanderers Stadium on Friday.

After more than 20mm of rain on Thursday, steady rain on Friday led to the match being called off two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled start when it became obvious that it would be impossible even to play a shortened game.

A minimum of 20 overs a side is necessary for a result to be achieved.

It was due to be the first of five one-day internationals, which will be followed by four Test matches.

The second match is scheduled for Centurion on Sunday.
