PRESTON, England: A second-half goal by Kevin Nolan was enough to see Newcastle beat Preston North End 1-0 on Monday and send them back to the top of the Championship with their fourth successive victory.
Victory gives Newcastle a two point lead over West Brom - like them relegated from the Premier League last season - and increased pressure on Preston, who have won just once in their last eight league matches.
Nolan struck in the 74th minute as the former Bolton star hit his shot past Andy Lonergan following fine approach play by Danny Guthrie.
Preston - who handed Michael Tonge his debut after signing on loan from Stoke - pressed forward in search of an equaliser and substitute Eddie Nolan forced Newcastle's veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper into a save 12 minutes from time.
The hosts had had the main run of play and forced Harper into several saves with former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor going close on two occasions while Paul Parry and Chris Brown also found Harper too difficult to beat.
For Newcastle - who last met Preston back in 1987 - it was their fifth away victory of the campaign, three more than they managed last season, while it leaves Preston winless at home since beating Coventry on September 19. - AFP/de
