MELBOURNE : Taiwan's Yani Tseng fired a closing round of seven-under 66 to storm to victory in the women's Australian Open at the Commonwealth Golf Course on Sunday.

The 21-year-old world number six ran over her big-name rivals, defending champion Laura Davies and four-time champion Karrie Webb, to finish with nine-under 283 and win by three shots.

England's Davies birdied the last two holes to shoot 71 and take outright second at six-under 286.

One shot back at five-under was overnight leader Webb, who faded with a closing round of one-over 74 for a five-under 287, while at four-under were Katherine Hull (72) and Italian Giulia Sergas (74).

Tseng swept to victory with seven birdies in her closing 12 holes, while Webb dropped three shots.

"Last night I said to my caddy that I felt I was going to play really good today," Tseng said.

"I just really felt I could make a putt. I changed my grip on Friday and then I could really feel the speed on these greens because this is a really tough course and you just need to be patient," she said.

"I just kept telling myself that ball is going to go in that hole... I was always positive."

The win was Tseng's fifth worldwide with the career highlight her victory in the US LPGA Championship in 2008.

This was her first victory since the LPGA Corning Classic in the US last April. - AFP/ms
