RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico: Australia's James Nitties eagled and added a birdie on his final hole on Sunday morning to match American Chad Collins for the lead after 36 holes of the storm-hit PGA Puerto Rico Open.
Nitties, who missed the cut in his first six starts this season, completed the final six holes of his second round with an eagle at the fifth and a birdie at the ninth to finish a second-round 66 and match Collins on 10-under 134.
Collins eagled the second hole just before darkness halted play on Saturday, then opened with a birdie Sunday and parred his way home to complete a 65 that left him level with the 27-year-old from Melbourne as the third round began.
Americans Skip Kendall, Kevin Streelman, Steve Wheatcroft and Kris Blanks were each one stroke back.
The storm-hit 3.5 million-dollar US PGA tournament, set for a Monday finish, was trimmed to 70 as the third round began in the afternoon. Showers on Thursday and Friday prevented the first round from finishing until Saturday.
While top players compete at the World Golf Championships event at Doral, lesser lights hope to grab a victory at this event.
Seven players were sharing seventh, including Canada's Graham De Laet and Colombian Jhonattan Vegas.
US veteran John Daly made the cut on the number at 142 after a second-round 73 while South Africa's Rory Sabbatini, the top-ranked player in the field at 55th, missed out of 145 despite a second-round 68. - AFP/de
