HELSINKI : David and Victoria Beckham left Finland in a private plane following the former England captain's Achilles tendon surgery, an airport official confirmed on Wednesday, as media reported the couple was headed for London.

"(The plane) has left," Juha Aaltonen, director of the Turku airport in south-western Finland told AFP. "We cannot give information on flight plans."

According to Finnish national broadcaster YLE, the plane, which left Turku at around 2:30 pm (1230 GMT), was headed for London.

David Beckham twisted his left ankle during the final minutes of AC Milan's 1-0 Serie A win against Chievo on Sunday and limped off the field before being stretchered away in pain and in tears.

The 34-year-old midfielder flew to Finland for surgery on Monday, and while Beckham himself called the operation a "success", the injury rules the midfielder out of the World Cup, which kicks off in South Africa on June 11.

Beckham's doctor Sakari Orava said he had recommended the footballer not to fly across to the Atlantic so soon after surgery and to recover in Europe for a few days before flying to his home in Los Angeles.
