OSLO: German biathlete Simone Hauswald won the women's World Cup sprint event on Thursday then announced she will retire in the coming weeks.
Hauswald, who won Olympic mass-start bronze last month in Vancouver, clocked a time of 20 minutes 42.4 seconds to win the 7.5-kilometre sprint event after flawless shooting at the range.
She finished 4.9 seconds ahead of Belarussian Darya Domracheva, and Sweden's Anna-Carin Olofsson-Zidek, who was third at 14.4.
It was only the fifth victory at World Cup level for the 30-year-old German, whose mother is from South Korea, but it could be her last after she announced she will retire at the end of the month.
Germany's Magdalena Neuner, who won two Olympic gold medals in Vancouver, finished sixth to reinforce her lead of the overall World Cup standings as main rival Helena Jonsson of Sweden finished down in 24th at 1:29.
With four races remaining Neuner, the World Cup champion in 2008, has 757 points and a 43-point lead over Jonsson, who has 714. - AFP/de
