BOSTON, Massachusetts: Tiger Woods got his US PGA Tour playoff bid back on track Saturday with a six-under 65 in the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Woods, three shots below the projected cut line going into the second round, birdied four of the first seven holes at the TPC Boston.
He picked up two more shots coming in, capping his bogey-free round with a birdie at 18 that put him in the middle of the field.
Woods's early tee time was an advantage, as the gusting winds that kicked up during his round could make for higher scores among the later starters.
Woods came into the tournament ranked 65th in the US tour's FedEx Cup playoff standings.
He must be in the top 70 at the end of this week's tournament on Monday to reach the third round, next week's BMW Championship in Chicago.
"I had to shoot a good one if I was going to move on, and I was able to do that today," Woods said. "I just felt better. I just felt more energetic and ready to go."
He had a two-shot lead over England's Luke Donald, who was selected last week by captain Colin Montgomerie for Europe's Ryder Cup team. Donald carded a 67 for 132.
Phil Mickelson carded a 65 and was in a group on 134 that included Stewart Cink, who is among the players under consideration for the US Ryder Cup team by captain Corey Pavin.
For the 10th time, Mickelson is playing with a chance to overtake Woods atop the world rankings.
After missing the cut last week, he put in some work with swing coach Butch
Harmon that he thinks has paid off.
"I got my game dialled in, and so I was pretty excited about this week," Mickelson said.
"But again, you don't know until you get out here, and you've got to shoot the numbers. Yesterday I didn't quite post the number I wanted to, but today I was able to do that."
Woods went out knowing he had no room for error. He birdied the par-five second, drove the green on the par-four fourth and added birdies on the sixth and seventh.
"Considering I didn't miss a shot for the first six holes ... it was a good start," he said.
Australian Jason Day and Zach Johnson were the overnight leaders, while Brandt Snedeker had seized the second-round clubhouse lead with a seven-under 64 for a 12-under total of 130. - AFP/fa
