NEW YORK : Nigerian fighter Samuel Peter will defend his World Boxing Council heavyweight title in October against Vitali Klitschko and he hopes to set up a title unification showdown with Wladimir Klitschko.
The World Boxing Council announced the fight Friday, pitting the 27-year-old "Nigerian Nightmare" against the retired former champion from Ukraine who is hoping to be elected mayor of Kiev on May 25 but will fight Peter regardless.
No site or date was announced, but ESPN reported October 4 or 11 were the likeliest dates and also that Peter would fight a title defense in July before facing the elder Klitschko brother, who has not fought in 3 1/2 years.
Peter, 30-1 with 23 knockouts, stopped Oleg Maskaev in March at Cancun, Mexico, to win the WBC crown. He would need to dispatch one Klitschko before having a hope of taking the other's International Boxing Federation crown.
"All of them are going down," Peter said after beating Maskaev. "I can beat any boxer in the world."
Vitali Klitschko, who turns 27 in July, is 35-2 with 34 knockouts but has not fought since stopping Britain's Danny Williams in December of 2004. He retired 11 months later and forfeited his crown.
Peter's only loss came in 2005 to Wladimir Klitschko at Atlantic City, New Jersey, but the African fighter has won six bouts in a row since dropping that unanimous decision.
