MOSCOW - Fights broke out in Moscow overnight Thursday between fans after Manchester United beat Chelsea in the Champions League final but there were no serious injuries, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

"There have been many fights in the centre of Moscow between fans of Manchester United and Chelsea," RIA Novosti quoted a police official as saying.

Echo of Moscow radio cited police as saying that English fans had been detained in the centre of the Russian capital but did not specify how many.

"There have been no serious excesses," Moscow police chief Vyacheslav Kozlov was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

Russian authorities deployed more than 14,000 security officers in the streets of Moscow as some 50,000 English fans descended on the city for the first all-English Champions League final.
