SINGAPORE: World Number One Lorena Ochoa has confirmed that she will defend her HSBC Women's Champions title in Singapore in March next year, the tournament's promoters announced on Wednesday.

The popular Mexican, a two-time Major winner, won the inaugural HSBC Women's Champions fending off a stellar field that included 18 of the World's Top 20 ranked players.

"It was very special for me to win the HSBC Champions at the start of this year," Ochoa said.

"I am really looking forward to returning in March (2009)."

The event will be played at the Tanah Merah Country Club and boast prize money of US$2 million, the largest purse for a women's event in Asia, with US$300,000 for the winner.

Ochoa finished the 2008 tournament at 20 under par, 11 shots clear of the field, with Annika Sorenstam and Paula Creamer, both winners in the preceding weeks' LPGA tournaments, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

After winning the inaugural HSBC Women's Champions Ochoa went on to win another five tournaments by the middle of May.

"We are looking forward to an even more successful event in 2009," said Robbie Henchman, director of golf at IMG, the tournament's promoters. - AFP/de
