QUEBEC - Russia's Nadia Petrova, coming off semi-final runs at Tokyo and Bali, will be the top seed and heavy favourite when the 175,000-dollar WTA Challenge begins here Monday.
Petrova, ranked 13th, is 40-22 on the year, including her eighth career victory which came in August at Cincinnati. She also reached finals at Stuttgart and Eastbourne.
Italy's 14th-ranked Flavia Pennetta, who would have been the second seed, pulled out citing personal issues, leaving Austrian third seed Sybille Bammer as Petrova's highest-ranked rival in the event at 26th.
Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, ranked 36th, is the fourth seed, followed in order by Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak, American Bethanie Mattek, Belarus' Olga Govortsova, Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson and Germany's Sabine Lisicki who moves into a ninth seed spot after Pennetta's pull out. - AFP/vm
