COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado: John McNally, who contended for a berth at the Beijing Olympics in 25-metre rapid fire pistol shooting, has been suspended for six months, the US Anti-Doping Agency announced on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old Texan tested positive twice within a month earlier this year for a banned masking agent but the offences were treated as one because he was given no notification of the first violation before the second was discovered.

McNally tested positive for chlorothiazide in a random test on April 24 and for chlorothiazide and hydrochlorothiazide on May 19 during testing at the US Olympic team trials on May 19, when he finished fourth in the rapid fire event.

Both substances are listed as banned diuretics and masking agents because they can conceal the presence of other performance-enhancing substances.

McNally's six-month ban began October 18 and all results since April 24, including his showing at the Olympic trials, have been forfeited. - AFP/de
