KOCHI, India: The Ericsson 3 yacht arrived in Kochi, India, on Monday to claim third place in the second leg of the Volvo Race around the world.

The stage was won on Sunday by fellow Swedes Ericsson 4 ahead of Spain's Telefonica Blue.

Ericsson 3 was followed by Spain's Telefonica Black, US entry Puma Ocean Racing, Dutch team Delta Lloyd and the Sino-Irish Green Dragon at the end of the stage from Cape Town, South Africa.

The last of the eight yachts, Team Russia, was about 400 nautical miles from Kochi Monday evening.

Race favorite Ericsson 4, skippered by Brazilian Olympic gold medallist Torben Grael, extended its lead in the overall standings when it reached the south-western Indian port on Sunday.

The yachts depart for Singapore on December 13 on the third leg.

The teams will use the two-week stop in Kochi to carry out repairs suffered in the arduous 4,550-mile journey.

The eight yachts representing seven nations set out from the Spanish port of Alicante, Spain on October 11 for the 10th edition of one of sport's most gruelling and hazardous events.

The finishing line in the race of 37,000 nautical miles is in St Petersburg, Russia, where the yachts are expected in June.
