INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana: Russian Dmitry Tursunov will find a familiar face waiting for him in the quarter-finals at the ATP Indianapolis Championships when he plays Frank Dancevic for the second time in six weeks.
Top seed Tursunov smoothly advanced into the last eight beating Brazilian Marcos Daniel 6-3, 6-3 while Dancevic put out German fifth seed Benjamin Becker 6-2, 7-5.
Tursunov and Dancevic are long-time rivals, with the Russian beating the Canadian for the Indy title two years ago as well as the grass-court Eastbourne final in June two days prior to the start of Wimbledon.
Tursunov won his 12th match at Indianapolis, where he also played the final a year ago.
"In our last few matches I've tried to prevent him going for his shots. You have to try to rush him, keep him on the back foot," said the California-based Russian. "He's a shotmaker that you cannot take for granted.
"I'll have to serve well and cut out more of my unforced errors. But I've been hitting some good shots even if I felt so lethargic during warm-up (after a rain-off on Wednesday) that I actually had to warm up twice."
On a day when rain interrupted play for two hours in late afternoon, several seeds found themselves heading to their next event after upset losses.
Qualifier Alex Bogomolov of the US beat number two Israeli Dudi Sela 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and American Wayne Odesnik recovered to beat number four Igor Kunitsyn 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Bogomolov was pleased to have put out Sela, who helped his country to a Davis Cup quarter-final upset of Russia this month in Tel Aviv.
"He came in with confidence," said Bogomolov, who said he and Sela passed time on Wednesday during a day of rain by playing ping-pong. "Maybe I knew something of his game from that."
American John Isner, who missed two months this spring with glandular fever, defeated number eight Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-4.
Frenchman Marc Gicquel maintained the status quo at the first event on the summer hard-court run to the US Open, as he beat a qualifier, Jesse Levine 6-2, 6-2.
Third-seeded Californian Sam Querrey extracted his revenge for a finals loss earlier this month against Rajeev Ram, beating the Indiana player 7-5, 6-3.
