BELGRADE : Serbia's president described as "historic" the meeting with his Croatian counterpart in Belgrade Sunday, as the former foes took another step toward improved cooperation.
"Since our meeting in Opatija our relations have taken on a new impetus, I think it is one of the best examples of bilateral cooperation in the region," Serbia's leader Boris Tadic said after meeting with Croatian President Ivo Josipovic, calling their encounter "historic", the Tanjug news agency reported.
The two leaders have increased their contacts since March when they met in the Croatian Adriatric village of Opatija.
During the break-up of Yugoslavia between 1991-1995, Croatia fought a bloody war with Serbian separatists backed by Belgrade.
"Peace and stability in the region is a shared goal, we must follow a policy of cooperation and dialogue," Josipovic said, stressing that the time had come to find "solutions to remaining questions."
These questions include the issues of refugees, missing persons and the genocide charges lodged by both countries with the International Court of Justice.
The past few months have seen ties considerably improved as the presidents of the two countries have been leading a new push towards reconciliation and have stressed their common goal of joining the European Union.
