WASHINGTON: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Wednesday publicly urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make good on his vow to make peace, and said Israelis must halt settlement building.

Mubarak noted he had met Netanyahu many times and said he looked forward to him making good on his repeated assertions that he wanted to forge a "long awaited peace" which Israelis yearned for.

But he also said Israel should "totally halt settlement activity until the peace process comes to a conclusion."

Mubarak spoke as he appeared in a press opportunity at the White House with US President Barack Obama, Netanyahu, Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas and King Abdullah II of Jordan.

Mubarak urged Israelis to "seize the current opportunity" adding "do not let it slip through your fingers," on the eve of the first direct talks between Israelis and Palestinians in 20 months.
