ADDIS ABABA: The African Union Peace and Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday concerning the war in Libya, an AU spokesperson said.
"The main objective is to engage with all parties in Libya, engage in dialogue and seek peaceful solutions to the situation," spokesman Noureddine Mezni told AFP.
Libyan rebels advanced on the capital Tripoli over the weekend, arresting one of Muammar Gaddafi's sons Seif al-Islam and reportedly surrounding the house of another as they threatened to topple Gaddafi's 42-year hold on power.
The AU High Level Committee on Libya will also meet on Thursday to discuss the crisis on the eve of a Peace and Security Council meeting on August 26.
The committee is chaired by Mauritania and includes heads of state from Congo-Brazzaville, Mali, South Africa and Uganda.
AU Commissioner Jean Ping is also a member and will attend Thursday's gathering.
"The heads of state will discuss the issue and will come out with a solution," Mezni said of Thursday's meeting.
The committee last met in Istanbul in May, where Ping called for a peaceful solution to the conflict.
"Only a political solution will make it possible to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people for democracy, good governance and the rule of law, and promote lasting peace in the country," the AU said in a statement.
