NABLUS, West Bank: A gunbattle between Fatah and Hamas loyalists on Thursday broke out in the occupied West Bank, which had hitherto been spared faction fighting that has killed dozens in Gaza, witnesses said.

The clashes began after fighters from the radical Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades - an armed group loosely affiliated to Fatah - surrounded a Hamas-run TV production officer in the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

Hamas gunmen subsequently intervened and an exchange of fire broke out between the two groups, witnesses said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Martyrs Brigades said it captured seven staff members from the Hamas-run office.

It was the first such gunfight in the West Bank since the latest surge of inter-Palestinian violence erupted in the Gaza Strip where more than 60 people have been killed in less than a week. - AFP/yy
