ALGIERS - Car bombs, at least one of them triggered by a suicide bomber, were behind two deadly blasts that rocked the Algerian capital on Tuesday, Algerian Interior Minister Yazid Zerhouni said.

One car exploded in front of the offices of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in the residential district of Hydra, while the other blew up in front of the Algerian Constitutional Council, close to the Supreme Court, Zerhouni said.

"The death toll is very high," the minister said, without giving a precise figure.

Medical and security sources said at least 27 people had been killed in the two blasts that occurred minutes apart.
