RAMALLAH, West Bank: Israeli soldiers shot dead two Palestinians in separate incidents near the West Bank city of Ramallah, medics said.

Abdel Kader Zeid, 17, died after being shot in the chest outside the Jewish settlement of Beit-El late on Tuesday, the medics said on Wednesday.

The Israeli military said soldiers had opened fire at a man who was brandishing a petrol bomb.

"Petrol bombs were later found at the spot," an army spokeswoman said.

"Over the past days, petrol bombs have been thrown at Beit-El and the soldiers led an ambush to catch the perpetrators," she said.

On Wednesday, troops opened fire and seriously wounded Mohammed al-Ramahi, 21, during clashes that erupted following Zeid's funeral near the Jalazun refugee camp, Ramallah hospital officals and witnesses said.

An Israeli army spokesman confirmed that "dozens of Palestinians took part in riots near an army post near Beit El, hurling rocks and burning tyres."

The troops opened fire on a protester who was preparing to throw a petrol bomb, he said.

Ramahi died of his wounds several hours later, Ramallah hospital officials told AFP.

The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be illegal. The Palestinians say persistent settlement expansion is the biggest obstacle to a comprehensive peace agreement with Israel.

At least 536 people have been killed since Israel and the Palestinians formally relaunched US-backed peace talks in November, the vast majority of them Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip, according to an AFP count.
