NEW YORK: More than 40 people were believed killed on Friday as a commercial plane crashed into a house a few miles from the airport in Buffalo, New York.

US media reports say the Continental Airlines plane, which had 48 people aboard, was arriving from Newark, New Jersey before crashing some eight kilometres from the airport.

Officials did not hold out hope for any survivors from the incident, adding that there was one fatality on the ground.

MSNBC said the plane hit the home and burst into flames at 10:20 pm (0320 GMT). CNN showed burning wreckage in the centre of a residential neighbourhood and reported that two people were taken to a local hospital.

One official told American media that there were "multiple deaths" from the crash of flight 3407 which went down at the suburb of Clarence in Buffalo.

The house which the plane crashed into is said to have been totally destroyed and it's unclear if anyone was in the home which is littered with smouldering wreckage from the plane.

It's believed that there was light snow and fog in the area before the plane went down and there was no distress call from the Continental plane said to be a Bombadier that can carry more than 70 passengers.

Residents of the area of have been evacuated as investigations get underway.
