ROME : Italy has found its first confirmed case of the Influenza A (H1N1) flu virus in the central region of Tuscany, but the patient has recovered, ANSA news agency reported on Saturday, citing a local health official.

"The higher health institute has confirmed to us by telephone that the patient in hospital tested positive for swine flu," Antonio Delvino, a Tuscany health official, was quoted as saying.

The man in his 50s arrived in Italy from Mexico on April 23 and was hospitalised at Massa, near Florence, a week later.

"The patient is cured, and has no further symptoms" of the A(H1N1) influenza which first broke out in Mexico and has killed 16 people there.

The man's family and associates had been given preventive anti-viral treatment, Delvino added.

ANSA said that seven other suspected cases of the disease in Tuscany had turned out to be negative. - AFP/ms
