MEXICO CITY: A representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday hailed the Mexican government for its response to the fading flu epidemic in its country, officials here said. The WHO representative in Mexico, Philippe Lamy, congratulated Mexican President Felipe Calderon on his administration's "responsibility and transaparency", Calderon's office said in a statement. "The lessons learned from the Mexican experience were essential for the international community," Lamy was quoted as saying. Calderon replied by thanking the world health body for its help, as well as US and Canadian laboratories that tested thousands of suspected flu cases. Mexico's latest toll from the A(H1N1) flu epidemic was 26 people dead and 840 infected. Mexico is at the heart of the virus outbreak which has now been detected in 22 countries. The Latin American nation is to slowly get back to normal from Wednesday when a shutdown on businesses, schools and other activities is gradually lifted. Calderon said this week that Mexico had the epidemic under control but that public health precautions would have to continue for some time given the virus's presence.
