WASHINGTON : The US Senate's judiciary committee kicked off Judge Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court historic confirmation hearings on Monday, amid expectations she will become the bench's first Hispanic justice.

"Welcome to the judiciary committee," Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the panel's chairman, told Sotomayor.

The district court judge, 55, entered the cavernous hearing room at 9:55 am (1355 GMT), to the frenzied clack-and-whirrs of cameras, escorted by Leahy and Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the committee's top Republican.
