STOCKHOLM : Saab said Monday it was hopeful about its future after Dutch company Spyker removed the deadline for US automaker General Motors to respond to its new bid for the loss-making Swedish brand.

"It is important for us that there is a continuing dialogue between interested (buyers) and GM. We can still hope as to what the conclusion will be," Saab Automobile spokesman Eric Geers told Swedish news agency TT.

After making a renewed bid for Saab Sunday, two days after GM said it would shut down the Swedish unit, Dutch sportscar maker Spyker announced it was extending indefinitely its proposal to buy the marque less than three hours before it was due to expire Monday at 2200 GMT.

"Spyker has been in contact with GM today and continues to develop its proposal for the purchase of Saab. Spyker has extended the validity of its proposal therefore until further notice," the company said in a statement.

Saab employs about 3,400 people in Sweden. According to media reports, its closure could lead to more than 8,000 job losses, including subcontractors and others dependent on the carmaker.

Earlier Monday, the Swedish government held a crisis meeting with local officials from Saab's hometown of Trollhattan in southwestern Sweden where it vowed to help the region and employees who risk losing their jobs.
