Eurozone finance chief calls for European auto 'rescue strategy'

FRANKFURT : The head of the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker, voiced support on Tuesday for a European "rescue strategy" for the auto industry in response to US plans along the same lines.

"I am in favour of a rescue strategy at the European level," Juncker told the German mass circulation daily Bild in an interview.

"If the American government saves Ford, General Motors and Chrysler from bankruptcy with injections of billions of dollars, we cannot just look on and leave European manufacturers all alone," he added.

The outgoing US Congress is debating a possible loan of 25 billion dollars (19.8 billion euros) to help out the troubled big three US automakers.

"There is no sense in Germany, Italy or France trying each on their own to protect their auto industry, there can only be a common solution," Juncker said.
