SINGAPORE: 11 fashion shows and more than 6,000 guests filled the Tent@Orchard at this year's inaugural five-day Audi Fashion Festival in Singapore.
Christian Lacriox, Vivienne Westwood and Gareth Pugh are some of the biggest names in the world of fashion and fans were treated to a dazzling show of their creations.
But while in terms of actual international designer presence, only Gareth Pugh appeared in person. However, organisers of the new festival aren't too worried.
Tjin Lee, managing director, Mercury Marketing and Communications, said: "I think the names are very exciting and innovative and I always say that Milan wasn't built in the day.”
The event organiser added that with proper collaborations Singapore could end up being the fashion hub of the region.
She added: "Singapore on its own is rather small - I think in terms of population. So what I'm trying to do is to build a network in Southeast Asia where people can come to Singapore both for the regional press, international media, buyers, so it becomes a platform for discovery not just for Singapore designers but also for Asian and regional designers."
This year, British designer Gareth Pugh, known for his work with shapes, debuted his Autumn Winter 2009 Women's Collection for the first time to the world.
Previously, it had only showed a video during Paris Fashion Week.
Gareth is also best known for his work with balloons to accentuate the limbs and joints of his models.
He said: “Basically when I first started the show, my clothes weren’t broken down to a jacket or a pair of trousers - it was more of just like shapes. Because whenever I look at a photograph or a painting, I always do it with my eyes half shut so you get the vague kind of shape of how things look to you. So when you look at a silhouette of a garment, that's the most important thing to do.
“You got to look to see what it'll look like as a black and white image and it was so fun to do some work with the body with these balloons cause it kind of redefines the shape of the body.”
Gareth has showcased his work at the Paris, Milan and London fashion weeks.
As to why he chose to debut his actual collection in Singapore to the world, he said: "Singapore is one of those really interesting places that is sort of cosmopolitan. It’s got lots of potential and it seems that especially with design and fashion its just starting to become a sort of place for people to look to.
When asked what fashion festivals in Singapore need to be on par with overseas fashion weeks he had a rather simple request.
Gareth said: “The lack of inside toilets - that's my one criticism on this event as if I need to go to the toilet, I have to go ten minutes outside to go to the toilet."
With his show taking Singapore by storm, the designer seems set make another trip to island. But there’s a catch.
“I would love to come back and see how things progress and hopefully they will have inside toilets by then." - CNA/vm
