Guys bare all to Joanne Peh while Dasmond Koh explores the girls!

SINGAPORE : Celebrities have access to the top stylists and gorgeous designer threads out there so imagine our disappointment when MediaCorp artistes Joanne Peh and Dasmond Koh told us they didn’t have any surprises (nor skeletons) hidden in their closets. And all they had to offer were loads of T-shirts.

“T-shirts and T-shirts and T-shirts. No surprises. Boring huh?” said Koh in an email interview with Channelnewsasia.com. “But you can never find a black top in my wardrobe.”

Koh who describes his fashion style as “causal, simple and rugged”, admits that he used to layer his clothes to look “bulkier”. Perhaps that’s why he prefers to stay away from black which has a slimming effect.

Also loving T-shirts is his “The Princess and the Prince” co-host Joanne Peh. “[I have] Tank tops and T-shirts of all styles but of the same colour tone - black, white, grey. Hmmm... I have no idea what would surprise you, organic underwear?”

Describing her personal style as “versatile and flexible”, it seems like Peh is just like any other girl who enjoys a good dose of retail therapy.

“There was a time when I loved bright colours, and then I decided to stick to basic colours, and then I began to like feminine florals and that’s why girls are always shopping,” said Peh, “My style switches according to my hairstyle and hair colour.”

Just like any celebrity under the critical eye of the fashion police, the actress who cites Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen as a fashion icon whom she looks up to, has had her fair share of air-time in both the “hits” and “misses” pages.

The 25-year-old even admits that “wearing adult clothes” as a teenager was a major fashion crime that she unfortunately was guilty of.

But now all grown up, this princess who was crowned Best Actress at this year’s Star Awards in April, is taking all praise and criticism in her stride, and reveals she’s now working on being fashionable.

When asked how she felt about a local magazine calling her out for two of her three outfits at the awards - namely a Herve Leger bandage dress which was worn by actress Christy Chung for a prominent slimming centre’s advertisement and an olive-green Hermes number worn by MediaCorp
Ah Jie Zoe Tay for a photoshoot - Peh graciously shrugs it off.

“I don’t keep track of whom having worn what before,” she said, “I’m honoured to be wearing a famous designer dress, made even more famous by whoever wore it before me. That’s cool!”

The media weren’t too kind to Koh either, who was slammed for his “rojak” getup. But the former Y.E.S. 93.3FM deejay isn’t one to bow down to the fashion police, or at least the magazine who gave his outfit a failing grade, without a fight.

“One man’s meat is another man’s poison,” said Koh philosophically, “In this instance, either I didn’t carry it off well, or the look simply didn’t appeal to the ‘reporter’ [who gave my outfit an F]. To start off, the one who penned it isn’t a fashion stylist... That’s why I decided to share my thoughts, just to be fair to my stylist and sponsors.”

So what are the fashion principles that these two artistes live (or die) by?

“Forget about fashion trends, they are there to keep the industry vibrant and active, not to kill your self-esteem if it just doesn’t work for you. Dress according to your age and body type,” said Peh.

As for Koh, who is “not really into fashion”, there's only one rule in the book: Dress for comfort.

Catch guest Qi Yuwu on the next episode of “The Princess and The Prince” on July 31, at 8pm on Channel 8. The series airs on the last Friday of each month.
