HONG KONG: One of China's leading Internet video sites has teamed up with a Hong Kong-listed digital media company to launch a new digital Hong Kong Tourist section.

"Discover Hong Kong" on Youku is aimed at giving Hong Kong advertisers a platform to tap into the growing market of Chinese consumers.

Youku, essentially a Chinese version of YouTube, is one of the top Internet video sites in China, with 300 million unique visitors per month.

Focus Media Network is a leading digital out-of-home media company in Hong Kong and Singapore.

It sells advertising airtime on its digital flat-panel displays seen around hundreds of elevator lobbies in office and commercial buildings.

The two partners are hoping to tap into the growing number of mainland visitors to Hong Kong, mostly on a shopping spree.

The new section on Youku will serve as a major platform for Hong Kong advertisers seeking to reach out to mainland consumers.

Youku international clients senior account director Leo Liang said: "It's a win-win situation.

"First, we can have more advertisers to invest in Youku, invest in Mainland China to attract potential consumers.

"Second, Hong Kong advertisers have a better platform or easier leverage to come into China without establishing a big settlement in China."

A Singapore Tourist section could be next.

Focus Media Network chairman & CEO co-founder PJ Wong said: "A lot of tourists from China are going to Singapore.

"I think we would explore immediately to replicate this success. As we can see 'Discover Hong Kong' has increased tremendously from the user and the click-through rates and the viewership.

"So it has been proven. So we want to replicate this model to other countries. "

Meanwhile, Focus Media said the out-of-home industry is the second-fastest growing advertising medium, following the Internet.

It expects growth to be fuelled by digital billboards and captive video networks.
