TOKYO : Ascott International is set to open its first Citadines property in Tokyo, right in the heart of the Japanese capital.
While luxury hotels are being hit by the global slowdown, Ascott is hopeful that it will be able to see good occupancy rates.
Ascott International has chosen the bustling shopping and entertainment hub of Shinjuku as the place to launch its Citadines brand in Japan.
The serviced apartment operator will open its Citadines property there this Sunday. The 160 rooms are all studio types, about 25 to 31 square metres each. And Ascott has priced a double room at US$90.
Room cleaning service and breakfast are not included, but still, the rates are highly affordable for a city known as one of the world's most expensive.
The kitchen is fully equipped with pans and utensils. The gym can be used 24 hours a day.
Business travel has been on the decline worldwide, and this means fewer foreign businessman in Tokyo. So Ascott is targeting to attract Japanese customers.
Elsie Ozaku, country general manager, Ascott International Management (Japan), said: "In fact, the strong yen has actually worked in our favour, because more Japanese are staying home. They would rather go on holiday within Japan.
"Therefore, we are targeting, focusing our marketing on these segments of Japanese leisure travellers. And in order to meet their expectations, we are customising some of our services here."
And these guests will feel at home when they see slippers and yukata, or light cotton kimono, in their Citadines room.
Citadines Shinjuku is aiming for 50 per cent occupancy during its first month in business.
Ascott is already operating two properties in Tokyo, but under the Somerset brand. - CNA/ms
