HONG KONG : More than 1,000 Hong Kong social workers staged a sit-in protest at the headquarters of the Social Welfare department in Wanchai on Wednesday.
They are calling on the government to review its welfare funding policy and to offer them equal pay with their civil service counterparts.
The strike was organised by an alliance of eight welfare organisations.
Extra police were called in after a group of protesters tried to storm the offices of the Welfare Bureau to deliver their demands.
No one was arrested or injured.
This is the second such protest after some 5,000 social workers marched across Central Hong Kong in September.
The government said it is currently reviewing the situation and is in discussion with the social welfare sector. - CNA /ls
