SINGAPORE: A former top Hong Kong civil servant said that she does not support a boycott of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Mrs Anson Chan, who is now a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, said this in an interview with Channel NewsAsia.
Unrest in Tibet have led to many calls for a boycott of the games which will be held for the first time in China later this year.
Mrs Chan said: "I wouldn't personally support a boycott because it's precisely through engagement, communication and through dialogue, that you can encourage China to be alert to how the whole thing is viewed in the Western world. And the Olympic Games will give the world a very good opportunity to see for themselves what has happened to China in decades since the open door policy."
She said she has noticed mixed reactions on how China is handling the Tibet issue. She added that people around the world should be intelligent enough to draw their own conclusions from the different reports on Tibet.
Mrs Chan is a strong advocate of democracy in Hong Kong but she has stressed that she has no ambitions to become chief executive even if the island gets a ‘One Man, One Vote’ system in future.
Her reason is because she would be too old by then.
Mrs Chan, who is in Singapore, also took time to tour the Channel NewsAsia newsroom. - CNA/vm
