BEIJING: The relationship between media and urban development was the main theme of a forum held in Beijing over the weekend.

Speakers discussed the various ways popular media could lend a hand in urban development. They generally agreed that urban development does not simply mean the building of infrastructure. It also includes the free flow and exchange of information, as well as a vibrant spirit.

Hu Zhenrong, vice-chancellor, Communication University of China, said: "For instance, it is no use publicising to the world about Beijing's long history, or about its culture such as Peking opera masks. Most people will say, so what?

"What is needed in reality is a dynamic city. It must have its attractions. The ability to be creative and innovative is more important than having a long history."

The forum - called "Media and Urban Development in China" - was jointly organised by the Communication University of China, MediaCorp, and China Aviation News.

Its co-organisers are the Media Management School of the Communication University of China, Channel NewsAsia International, and Ding Li Communications.
