BEIJING: Chinese consumers are on the hunt for bargains as they prepare to usher in the Lunar New Year of the Tiger.
China posted 8.7 per cent growth for 2009, putting it well on track to overtake Japan as the world's second largest economy in the Year of the Tiger.
Surveys showed that Chinese consumer confidence is at an all time high and the crowds at Tianyi Wholesale Market in the west of Beijing clearly prove this.
However, businesses are not taking things for granted, with a hope to attract more customers through competitive prices.
Business owners may yet feel the full swing of China's recovery, but consumers are more than willing to spend as they look forward to greater prosperity in the Year of the Tiger.
Whether the optimism will sustain remains to be seen, as many Chinese are still waiting to experience the real economic improvement in their daily lives.
