SINGAPORE: He has more than a decade of performing experience, over 40 albums, EPs and live recordings to his name, and wears some of the strangest costumes to ever grace a concert stage.
But Eason Chan - often called the leading male artiste in the Canto- and Mando-pop arena - doesn’t want you to believe the hype.
He’d rather you see for yourself when he performs at the Singapore Indoor Stadium next Saturday for his current Eason’s Moving On world tour. The concert here is named Moving On Stage 11 because Singapore is his 11th stop.
But, you say, seeing as he was only here 18 months ago, why should you go to this gig?
“The focus of last year’s concert was on my singing,” explained Chan, who turns 34 the day after his Singapore gig. “There were no fancy costumes whatsoever. For this Moving On tour, the audience can expect lots of dancing and remixes of a few songs.”
Don’t be surprised then to hear different versions of "Every Tomorrow" or "Long Time No See" - mixing it up on stage is something that Chan likes to do to shake things up a bit.
But, he added, “Since this is a tour, we’ll be maintaining a certain theme. There might be slight differences in the song list and costumes. We’ll wait and see.”
Chan’s recordings may have given him his audience, but it’s on stage that his music really comes alive. According to him, he’s got to thank his fans for that.
“Audiences from all over - the US, Canada, Australia, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Malaysia - are all just as passionate.
“Take my first stop in Taipei - it was pouring, and people were watching the show in their raincoats. I was really moved that they were there to support me despite the foul weather, I felt so bad. I would like to say ‘sorry’ to them.”
His biggest challenge though, isn’t in hitting the right notes. “The dance choreography is rather challenging this time round because I’ve had to master quite a number of moves in a very short time,” Chan admitted.
“Thank goodness, it looks pretty good! I actually intended to do a back flip in one of the dances, but I injured myself during the rehearsals, so we had to cancel it.”
“Hopefully, I get to do it in future performances,” he added.
In the meantime, he’s focusing on his show in Singapore and hopes that the fans here will “come prepared to party”.
“Work up the atmosphere and get a high from it - it’ll definitely motivate me to perform better!” he said.
Eason Moving On Stage 11 is on July 26, 8pm, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Tickets at S$88, S$138, S$168, S$198 and S$228, available from Sistic. - TODAY/fa
