LOS ANGELES: Fans of the fantasy romance movie "Twilight" will have something to cheer about. The green light for its sequel which will be based on "New Moon", the second book in Stephenie Meyer's popular series of vampire novels, has been officially lit.
"I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with (film company) Summit Entertainment. I'm thrilled to have the chance to work with them again on 'New Moon'," Meyer said.
The news comes as "Twilight" took in US$70.6 million in its North American box office debut over the weekend, more than 44 per cent of the total weekend take for the top 12 films showing, the industry monitor said.
The madness began with impressive advance ticket sales followed by a staggering US$35.7 million on its opening day, which is three times that of the previous week’s box office winner, “Quantum of Solace.”
The movie’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, said that the movie is on track for the US$150 million box office haul which would automatically green-light sequels.
"Twilight" is also set to become the highest-grossing film ever made by a female director, as well as the highest-grossing vampire film of all time.
Based of the first series of novels written by Meyer, the story focuses on Bella Swan, a human played by Kristen Stewart, who falls in love her vampire lover, Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson.
The "Twilight" series has sold close to 14 million copies worldwide and has even generated dozens of internet sites for fans who refer to themselves as "Twilighters".
"Twilight" opens in cinemas in Singapore on December 18.
