LONDON - Founding member Noel Gallagher said Friday he was quitting British rock group Oasis because he can no longer work with his brother Liam after a series of rows, in a statement on the band's website.
Noel said he was announcing "with some sadness and great relief" that "I quit Oasis tonight."
He added: "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."
Noel went on to apologise "to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan."
The announcement came after the group cancelled an appearance at the Rock en Seine music festival near Paris on Friday, with organisers saying the brothers had had a fight before they were due to come on stage.
A spokesman for the festival's organisers announced to the crowd: "Liam and Noel have had a fight backstage. The group no longer exists. They will not play tonight and they are cancelling the rest of their European tour."
Lead singer Liam and his older brother Noel have had a notoriously stormy relationship since the band was formed in 1991, but there had been strong rumours over the past week that the band was set to split.
