HONG KONG : Hong Kong star Andy Lau has admitted to marrying long-time girlfriend Carol Chu in Nevada last year.
The 47-year-old made the admission on his Andy Lau Club site on Saturday after Hong Kong’s Apple Daily reported that the singer-actor and Chu, a former Malaysian beauty queen, had registered their marriage in Clark County, Nevada, on June 23.
Lau had repeatedly denied his relationship with Chu and even said that he would announce to the public when he decides to get married.
The Heavenly King who has been romantically linked to Chu, 43, for 24 years, apologised to fans for not being truthful.
“I am ashamed that I have not been able to keep my promise and tell everyone about it [the relationship], I have caused my family, friends, and friends in the media much embarrassment, I am sorry... I will explain everything in due time,” he wrote.
That same day, Lau dropped another bombshell, revealing that he and Chu wed because they wanted to have a child. The doctor had advised the couple to opt for artifical insemination due to their age but in order to do so in Hong Kong, they needed to be married.
“After much thought, we decided to register our marriage in the United States in order to receive artificial insemination in Hong Kong. We kept this a secret because she [Chu] did not want to be pursued by the press. I thought I’d let everyone know when it was successful and the foetus was stable but I only complicated things,” he wrote.
Lau revealed through his assistant that Chu is not pregnant and that they do not have any kids.
The couple were rumoured to have an 11-year-old daughter after a girl was spotted travelling with them to Malaysia for Chu’s late father’s funeral.
