SHANGHAI : Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung may be known for her film roles but the star is set on expanding her horizons and trying something she has never done before - recording her first music album.

In an interview with The Bund Newspaper, Cheung revealed that her foray into music started when she made the 2004 film, "Clean" with French director and ex-husband Olivier Assayas.

Being the first Asian actress to win an acting prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role as a rock singer’s wife in "Clean" saw her performing four songs including "Strawberry Stain", "Down In The Light", "Wait For Me" and "She Can't Tell You".

Cheung knows her limits when it comes to carrying a tune.

"I always go out of tune when I sing and friends know that I can’t sing well."

She revealed that it was during the filming of “Clean” in France where she met a French couple who encouraged her to give singing a go.

They told her that singing was not difficult as many professional singers with imperfect voices could still achieve the desired effect through technology.

Their advice sparked an interest in her which led her to pursue music.

According to media reports, the 45-year-old actress who is currently shuttling between Hong Kong, where she resides, and Beijing, is in talks with musicians from Norway for her album.

“Once I have completed this album, I will be satisfied,” she said.

Since starting her career in 1983, Cheung has over 70 films to her credit. She was supposed to have appeared in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" but her scenes were deleted from the final cut.
