SINGAPORE : Celebrity hairstylist and self proclaimed “Godmother” to the stars, David Gan, presented a diamond ring estimated to be worth a five-figure sum as a wedding gift to actress Fann Wong.
During the customary tea ceremony of celebrity couple Fann Wong and Christopher Lee’s wedding on Tuesday, Gan was moved to tears but said no one saw him crying as he had glasses on.
It is known that the couple as well as many other celebrities, address Gan as “Ah Bu” (Hokkien for mother) and that he often brews bird's nest for them.
Doting on the newly weds, he said, “Fann is very important to me. I’ve been by her side through her ups and downs. During my own difficult times, she has also been there for me. Christopher is also very dear to me and I have helped in whatever way I could for the wedding preparations.”
The soft-spoken bachelor, who is also the pair's wedding planner, shared that he was grateful that the couple had so much faith, trusting him with their wedding, and that feeling was something which “words could not describe”.
Tuesday morning saw Gan waking up early to style the bride’s hair in preparation for the groom’s arrival. When asked what gift he had prepared for the bride, Gan said, “Styling Fann’s hair is already a gift in itself.”
When probed further, he revealed, “I’ve taken care of Fann since she first started out [as a model] and what I am giving to her is priceless, my very own heart-shaped diamond ring.”
Gan bought the rings for himself 15 years ago as a pair. One had been given to MediaCorp actress Zoe Tay during her wedding in 2001 while the other is for Wong. Both diamonds are estimated to be around eight carats.
Believing that it's the thought that counts, Gan said, “You can’t measure the gift from its value,” adding that the newlywed’s recent trip to the Maldives for their bridal shoot was also a “gift” from him.
Describing the newlyweds as driven individuals filled with aspirations, Gan revealed that they have plans to direct one day.
“I hope that once Fann completes what she has set out to do, she will resume work.”
When asked what Wong needed to accomplish, Gan said, “Having children for she likes them a lot.”
