SINGAPORE : Former MediaCorp actor Huang Yiliang’s big screen directorial debut “Autumn In Winter” will not see the light of day in cinemas.
Produced by Huang’s Red Group Film, the indie movie will be released straight to DVD instead after failing to be picked up by local movie distributors.
With an estimated million dollar budget, “Autumn In Winter” tells the tale of a young woman with a mysterious past played by newcomer and model, Shelia Sim, who rents out bungalow rooms at low rates that comes with a special request.
Sim, 25, landed the lead role after beating 300 other girls who auditioned for it. The rest of the cast includes Phyllis Quek, Nat Ho and Bernard Tan.
The 49-year-old Huang, felt that it was time to move on to a different challenge after having acted for the past 20 years. Calling himself not just a director but an “actor-director”, Huang had big aspirations for the movie.
“It is a huge step for me but everything is about timing and the formation of Red Group Film was the first step to realising this dream,” said Huang in an interview last year.
Production work began late last year and the film was scheduled for a first quarter release in theatres. For now, the first-time director has to resort to other means to get his movie screened.
According to The New Paper, Huang said the film could have been “a bit too artistic” and that distributors were not confident enough that audiences would watch it.
He admits that it would probably have been easier for him had he made a comedy like what Jack Neo usually does. But Huang noted that he might be accused of copying Neo if he went that route.
The film has been released on DVD and is available for sale on the movie’s official web site and at video stores where Huang is reported to have appeared personally to promote its release.
In his two-decade long acting career, Huang acted in numerous Channel 8 Chinese dramas and had won several Best Supporting Actor awards at the annual Star Awards, including one for his role as an obnoxious, complaining slob in “Holland V”.
