SINGAPORE: If you do a search for "Natalie Imbruglia video" on the Internet, you might come across this gem of a video for her single Want, off her latest album Come To Life, which has Natalie looking like she's recording a home video... and she's misplaced all her clothes.
There she is, rolling around in bed in all her womanly glory, with her naughty bits just out of shot or strategically covered by a well-placed limb.
Now, we know she sang that song about lying naked on the floor, but this was taking things a point too far, wasn't it?
"I think people aren't expecting something like that from me," said Natalie over the phone from London. "It's one thing to be exploited, but it's another thing to be a woman at 34 who's feeling sexy and confident.
"It was completely my idea," she said, laughing. "I'm like a frustrated actress, so I make a video that matches the song, and I think this video is completely appropriate for the subject matter of that song. It's quite nice to get to an age where I'm comfortable about doing something like that - wearing less clothes and showing a bit of flesh."
Coming to terms with showing off her sexuality was just a matter of time and getting to her current frame of mind, she said.
"In the past I was too self-conscious and not confident enough," said Natalie. "I hadn't done videos like this because I didn't want to. I wanted to this time... That's how I was feeling at the moment."
The album, she said, also describes her life at the moment, but "the moment" actually began two years ago. She had already completed an album, but her then-label issued a greatest hits package, Glorious, instead. She ended up waiting a year before eventually leaving her label.
Natalie found the original album "wasn't fresh" any more, so she began writing new songs and updating older songs, some of which were done with a little help from Chris Martin of Coldplay, who worked with her on two songs, Want and Fun, and let her use a Coldplay track, Lukas, that was left off their Viva La Vida album.
"It was a little intimidating, and it took me a couple of days to get my confidence up, but he was very encouraging," she said. "I had a great time working with him."
In the meantime, her personal life was also in upheaval. She separated from hubby Daniel Johns (of rock band Silverchair) and reports started surfacing of her "wild behaviour". All those feelings, she said, are captured on the album.
"I think this record is about coming into my own. There's this sense of freedom and the confidence of becoming the person you should be instead of the person you think you should be," she said.
"Life's pretty good."
