SINGAPORE: When Universal Music released the boxset compilation of Singapore music from the 1960s, 100 Greatest Singapore '60s, they did not anticipate the reaction it would generate.
"It was just overwhelming. We sold close to 4,000 units within three months," said Lim Teck Kheng of Universal Music Singapore.
"It was very encouraging to read a review in Britain's Record Collector Magazine on how great this collection was, making it a pride and joy for us in documenting the golden age of Singapore music."
Generally, album sales for local English music rarely cross the 5,000-unit mark, making this compilation a surprise success for them, said Lim.
In response to demand for more such gems, Universal plans to release More Singapore '60s: Treasures From The Vault, this week.
Unlike its five-disc predecessor, this is a double-disc affair, featuring more vintage music from artistes like The Silver Strings, The Checkmates and The Crescendos, as well as tracks from the Girvin Sisters, Ernie Djohan And Her Buana Suara, Ray Johnson And The Diamond Four, and Aida Mustafa.
For this project, Universal gathered feedback from music enthusiasts, '60s musicians like Audie Ng of The Silver Strings and Henry Suriya of The Boys, as well as Joe Pereira, author of the music tome, Legends Of The Golden Venus, who is somewhat of an expert on the local music scene of that decade.
Fans say a release like this is more than welcome.
"It's very difficult to get CDs of music by The Crescendos or The Quests these days," said retiree Phillip Woon. "So something like this is always nice to have to remind you of the good ol' days."
Well, if fans react the same way to this new one, Universal's Lim said that there might just be more of these volumes put out. "There was so much happening in the '60s; we are constantly challenging ourselves to make the next volume better."
Guess those good ol' days might just be back again.
More Singapore '60s: Treasures From The Vault is expected to be out at the end of the week.
