SINGAPORE: Taiwanese bands Mayday and S.H.E. dominated the Singapore Hit Awards on Friday night, taking home five and four trophies respectively, while newcomer Rachel Liang and local songstress Tanya Chua followed closely with three each.

In almost a clean sweep, rock band Mayday took home five awards – one for each member – out of six nominations. They were crowned Artiste with Most Chart Hits, Best Band, Most Popular Group/Band, Album of the Year ["Poetry of the Day After"] and Asia Media Award (Band).

The usually casually-clothed band even dressed up for the occasion, ditching tees and jeans for partial suits - completed with ties, bow-ties, blazers and pants.

Bassist Masa and lead vocalist Ashin joked: "We're usually dressed down but today we're clad in smart clothes to express our respect for such an important award ceremony."

But the starchy smart wear did not stop the five from living up to their hype, bringing the over 5,000-strong crowd up from their seats with their three-song set - "The Most Important Little Thing", "Stubborn" and "Angel".

Taiwanese girl group S.H.E., despite having won one less award than Mayday, were probably the happiest artistes of the night.

For reasons unknown, the trio were in exceedingly high spirits throughout the award ceremony, drawing laughs from the crowd as they imitated the hosts, staged a mock-brawl with Mayday over the Most Popular Group/Band award, copied Mayday's thank-you speech, and generally skipping about the place merrily.

The threesome took home four trophies – Best Group, Outstanding Regional Artiste (Taiwan), Most Versatile Artiste of the Year and Asia Media Award (Group).

Their performance set was arguably the best of the night with splendid stage presence, wrapping up the ceremony on a high note with the stadium up on their feet to tracks "Time Lock", "Superstar" and "Beautiful New World".

However, the personality who upstaged both Mayday and S.H.E. was 93.3 FM deejay Dennis Chew's alter-ego Aunty Lucy, who took up so much time cracking up the audience with her gossipy antics that the programme overran.

Singaporean songstress Tanya Chua bagged three awards for Best Local Lyrics, Outstanding Local Music Achievement and Asia Media (Female Artiste).

Newcomer Rachel Liang also won three trophies - Meritorious Newcomer, Most Popular Newcomer, and in a surprising upset, thwarted Fish Leong, Jolin Cai and Rainee Yang to grab the Most Popular Female Artiste award.

Another notable winner was Jam Hsiao, who claimed Best Male Vocalist and Most Popular Male Artiste, snatching the title from veterans Wang Leehom, Show Luo and Jay Chou.

Local singer Kelvin Tan was presented the COURTS MV Award, as well as the Inspirational Award, for overcoming his disability to follow his dreams. The humble crooner said: "This is the first time I'm receiving a music award, and I'm really happy to have won because I feel appreciated musically. The next thing I hope to overcome... I hope to be able to dance on stage!"

The Best Local Artiste Award went to JJ Lin, who was unable to attend the ceremony as he is currently in Los Angeles recording his new album; Fahrenheit was crowned Most Acclaimed Artiste of the Year; vocal powerhouse Amei won Best Female Vocalist; Jay Chou was awarded the Best Album Producer while Sodagreen took home Best Composing Artiste.
