SINGAPORE: Veteran Singapore musician Douglas Oliveiro was beaten up by a group of unknown men near his home last Wednesday, fracturing his skull.
The former "Singapore Idol" judge who also suffered cuts and bruises on his face, received treatment at a local hospital and was placed under overnight observation before being allowed to go home.
According to Oliveiro, he was on his way to buy food from a 24-hour Shop N Save store near his Yishun home some time after midnight on Wednesday when he encountered a group of men who blocked the footpath. He asked the group to let him pass and they did, only to accost him from behind moments later.
"Perhaps they took exception to the tone of my voice," he told reporters.
"There were seven or eight of them. I have never seen them before," he added, noting that the men appeared to be quite young, either in their late teens or early 20s.
Oliveiro managed to escape his assailants and was later admitted to hospital and gave his statement to the police.
The 52-year-old guitarist-singer who was known for his energetic shows, used to perform with pop-rock group Energy in the late 1990s. He now takes the stage once a week at J Bar in M Hotel.
He had been planning a big comeback for the past two months but that will have to wait as he is currently recovering from his injuries. The swelling on his face has begun to subside though his black eye remained.
He told reporters that "it was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time... But I am still looking to make a return in a big way".
